Public Domain Note

In the U.S., any work published before 1929 is in the public domain. Works published from 1929–1977 can be public domain only if they weren’t renewed or complied with copyright rules. Most works published after 1977 are still under copyright unless explicitly released. Always check source notes—just because something is old or online doesn’t guarantee it’s free to use commercially.
